Spooky, Scary

Paranormal ActivityLast night, Will and I went to see the #1 movie in the country, Paranormal Activity, and as our recap indicates, our experiences of the audience with which we shared the movie were VERY DIFFERENT. Like, diametrically opposed. I’m still kind of mad about it, actually.

(I’ve been a bit remiss lately in posting about our recaps here — sorry about that! — but you can find them all here.)

I usually don’t care too much either way about audience participation, but in this case it came close to ruining the movie for me. When we saw PA, the theater was full of teenagers, one of whom, sitting right in front of us, took a phone call in the middle of the movie. A girl in our row cackled and repeated over and over, “This is so gay, this is so gay” every time Katie stood by the bed in the middle of the night. After the last shot, when the lights went up and the theater was dead silent (which, along with the lack of credits, could have added to the creep factor) she groaned loudly and kept repeating that the movie was “so stupid and gay.” Thanks for your ridiculous commentary, sweetheart.

I liked the movie, and was scared and creeped out by it, but I did think Blair Witch was scarier.
