Yeah, the saucepan/bowl thing is the "right" way to do it. But I microwave successfully all the time too when I'm lazy. A minute at a time seems to work. It might not look melted after 2 minutes or so but stirring will usually finish it off. Just keep a keen nose on it and stop if you smell burning.

It would be for chocolate. I thought I could microwave it, but Stephanie said I would only be able to do it for a couple of seconds at a time and then keep having to stir it. She recommended a standard saucepan full of water, with a glass or metal bowl perched on top (with the bottom not touching the water in the pot. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll be in Toronto for a couple of weeks next month and may attempt the recipe for my sister, since I don't think she'll be travelling to New York for actual Magnolia any time very soon.

Yeah, you totally don't need a double boiler. I think microwaving chocolate or butter is way easier anyway, which is what I'm assuming you'd be doing?

What's the double boiler for? If it's just for melting chocolate or butter, you can totally do that in the microwave. Or place a heat-safe bowl over a pot of water.

If you're enjoying the baking thing, I highly recommend Martha Stewart's cookie book. It's organized by the TEXTURE of the cookie, which is sort of genius. And lots of the recipes aren't too Martha-y at all. The soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies are super-easy and the best I've ever had.

I think to make it 93% more web 2.0, it should be called SpnstrCamp. The web says, "down with vowels!"
