My hair just keeps getting longer and longer. Which is fine — I like to have the ponytail or pigtail option when I don’t feel like blow-drying it. And since I don’t believe in fighting what your hair is naturally going to do, keeping my very thick, very wavy hair long means several tiers of layers. When I started getting it cut by someone new after moving to New York, I brought in this photo as a guide:
And that’s still what I have, more or less:
The only thing is, that’s what it looks like in the ideal desert conditions of Marin County. When we were in Hawaii and L.A., it was way too hot to have all that hair on the back of my neck, and so humid that it frizzed up like mad about five seconds after I stepped outside. It doesn’t look like that much hair from the angle above, but dig it:

So with summer nearly upon me, I’m looking for something less heavy and more manageable. My sister thinks I should go back to my summer ’06 look:

But I’ve also had my eye on this option:
Thoughts? You have until 4:30 on Monday to tell me what to do with my head.

Summer ’06 hair from another, possibly more flattering angle: http://www.flickr.com/photos/glark/192857726/
Are you sure you want to be blow drying and flat ironing your hair daily to get the glam shot? Have you considered using Laminates and embracing the curl? But the summer look 06 was cute.
If you went with the longer option and didn’t like it, you could then cut more to get to Summer ’06 (which is a fetching look, btw — hey, is that Bay subway station in the background?)
I have thick, wavy hair too, and I also hate having my hair on the back of my neck when it’s hot, and therefore look forward to your decision.
Won’t the summer ’06 look, while awesome, bother you when it’s hot, though?
Or maybe you’re not as crazy as I am; that would drive me insane in hot weather.
Summer 06 is so cute it hurts my mind. I may steal it.
I have the same kind of hair, and a couple months ago I started rocking a shorter-in-back cut. Take Summer ’06, make all the layers an inch or two longer, and then chop the hell out of the back. So light! So airy! So willing to be corralled into tiny pigtails when necessary! I wish I had a picture for you, but all I have is the name of an L.A. salon.
Well my first question is in regards to the pic under Tina Fey. What were you charged with? HA!
Sorry doll, couldn’t resist. I think summer ’06 cut is adorable, and I think you could even go a smidge shorter.
Well, I think I’ve gone on the record in the past as being pro summer ’06 haircut, and I stand by that. (My opinion could be coloured by the fact that I just got a similar haircut, which, of course, rocks. And oh my god, it feels so good to have gotten rid of all that hair.)
I love love love the Summer ’06 cut, but I’m also facing a similar dilema. I run, and I live in Florida, so while I want to just chop it off, I’ve resorted to keeping it long for now and putting in cute layers like you did. I have to be able to pull it up off my neck for the summer, then I usually cut it short in the fall.
So I vote for something longer with less crazy layers, and if you don’t like it, totally Summer ’06.
Summer ’06, for the reasons BoDiva stated. Straight hair is lovely, but if you don’t come by it naturally it’s a suck to maintain when it’s hot.
I’m intrigued by the idea of starting with summer ’06 and cutting the back really short. Too bad you don’t have a photo!
The flickr photo is the one I love most. I think your hair is too thick to go much shorter than that. I love you very much, and this next statement is coming from love, but if you go much shorter you look too butch. Sorry. Remember when you went *really* short? Not like Mom short, but very short in the back? Not as cute. (I love you.) The haircut I suggested looks best on you based on the many styles you’ve had, even if you only count since I moved in with you in ’01. The mid length is SO much better than the long. Not that you aren’t always cute, but you are the cutest with that hair. Now go chop! And call me after with photos to share online.
Ooohh, and I forgot to mention that since your hair is so curly, you’d flat iron it once and then never again and your hair might not hang the same if you don’t straighten it. Don’t go with the last one. Embrace the curls.
I don’t think Leah really loves you.
I’m not sure either. Also, who said anything about cutting it SHORT short again? Also, it’s Ossington subway station, not Bay.
I had the chop. Photos to come!
I think your hair looks great , I can’t ever remember it being so long. Summer 06 is my favourite look of yours. That was a great summer. However , you should try the Michelle Monaghan.
Ugh , I’m so hungover from last night’s Broken Social Scene show that I don’t even know what day it is.
