FUCK No On Prop 8

As incredible as Tuesday night was, the passage of the hateful Proposition 8 in California really did cast a pall on what could have been a completely jubilant night (as did the success of similar ballot measures in Arizona and Florida, though I won’t front — I don’t know anyone who lives there so those didn’t hit me as hard). I can’t say it any better than Eric did, and I wish I could have seen the protest at the Mormon Temple last night — but for those who are in California feeling shitty, you can keep up to date with planned Prop 8 protests here, you can donate to the efforts to invalidate Prop 8 here, and you can find out how to support LGBT equality everywhere here. Above all, stay mad. Remember how mad we all were this time four years ago? That’s what made Howard Dean come up with his 50 state strategy, and then in 2006 the Democrats took back the House and the Senate, and then three days ago this happened.

And if all else fails, just don’t pay your taxes. That’s pretty hard for a government to ignore — especially yours.

Hear, hear! This fight is not even close to being over.

I love the tax protest. It’s so perfect in its simplicity. The LDS church can start paying taxes to pick up the slack, now that it’s going to play a role in legislation.

It was not a well-thought-out fight, and we assumed the rush toward a huge symbol of equality — in the form of Barack Obama — would spill over to lesbigay equality, too.

We were wrong.

And, yeah, the 50 State Strategy is where we need to be looking because the Christian Coalition, emboldened by the legislated discrimination in 4 more states and stinging from their presidential rebuke, are going after all of them.

Thanks for all those great links!

In Arkansas, 400 children will be removed from their adopted/foster homes and placed into group homes thanks to a ruling that unmarried couples, of any gender, can’t adopt or be foster parents.

400 children, taken “immediately” from what they consider home.

Fuck that.

OK — I want to cry about all of this. The kids, the couples, the families being broken up or never allowed to even begin. As I said, pretty much in these words, to the sanctimonious bastards who showed up in my doorstep pushing Prop. 8 a few weeks ago: there are children dying of disease and starvation, families picking through dumps for food, prisoners of conscience being tortured, horrible diseases uncured, child soldiers fighting, and war-maimed civilians in desperate need of help, not to mentions schools needing books, single moms needing help, homeless needing to be fed, elderly who could use a visit…and you spend your Saturday morning trying to stop people who are in love from getting the same chance at happiness as the rest of us? What the hell is WRONG with you people?

Then I slammed the door in their faces. It felt good.

Fuck this noise.
