Finally it can be told: I have a new job! My employers were quoted on Variety.com today, but in case you can’t get behind the paywall, here’s the gist. A while ago, Yahoo! hired Courtney Reimer and Mark Lisanti to create a suite of entertainment blogs, and Courtney and Mark went out and hired some seriously amazing people to write them (and also me). You may have already read earlier this week that Will Leitch is going to be running the movie blog with Tim Grierson. Also on board are Erin Carlson and Josh Duboff (Celebrities), and Caryn Ganz and Daniel Kreps (Music). Running the TV blog, it’s Lindsay Robertson…and me! (Probably you already guessed that part.)

Without getting super-sappy (impossible), this is already one of my most fun jobs ever. The whole staff is humblingly great, but getting to work closely with Lindsay — whom I’ve admired since she was at Videogum, and who I once tried to hire away for Sling.com — is a delight and a thrill every day. In addition to being a tremendous writer, she’s hilarious and a generous collaborator and knows the internet back to front. This sweet, lovely post she wrote today (now that we can “come out” as colleagues) gives a good sense of the professional love affair we’ve been having for the past couple of months. I realize that this is the kind of effusion you normally don’t see except when celebrity couples gas on about how great their marriage is, the day before they announce their divorce. But this is already a great job — I feel so lucky to be here! When we actually have a blog people can read, it’s going to be so much better that I won’t even know what to do with myself.

Guys, it just got so much easier to listen to my adamant opinions (and weird, hybrid Canadian/indeterminate American newsreader accent) (and reliance on the word “ultimately” — what?) whenever you want.

FIRST: Dave and I and our dear friend Joe have started a new weekly podcast. Extra Hot Great will feature discussion of movies, TV, songs for sale in the Lips store, and probably more. The first episode went up Sunday; you can listen to it on the site, or download it via iTunes. I look forward to arguing with you about The Social Network!

SECOND: After a forced hiatus due to issues and circumstances (I don’t know how things work), all episodes of Overwhelming Positivity are back online — that means the full run of Atomic Tour episodes, and my all-time favourite, “Tandoori Lady” (the one we recorded with Pam in Hawaii last year). I’m not going to claim it’s as brilliant a notion as “Gay Expendables,” which found Joe and me on Twitter recasting the movie (surprise! Jason Statham’s in both versions). But I had this idea that The Expendables is basically the same movie as The Women. I know you haven’t seen either movie — and you shouldn’t; they’re both terrible — but trust me.

I pitched it to Jessica Grose at Slate.com‘s Double X blog, and she did a fantastic edit on my ramblings. You should read it.

I’m not going to sit here and lie to you guys. Will and I have spent May and what’s already elapsed of June just missing each other at work, more or less, so when it came to Movie #16, we just skipped the poll and chose MacGruber for ourselves, and I’m pretty glad we did, because it was hilarious. Don’t misunderstand: it’s really dumb, but in the best way.

However, next week we’ll both be present, so it’s the return of the poll! You can go vote for any of those, though my hope is that it’ll be The A-Team. Speaking of dumb.

It was Iron Man 2! Thank God, and all of you who voted for it. Go read the recap, and then…you know what? Take a break. You earned it. (Also we’re taking next week off, since I’ll be in Austin. I’m sure some of you wanted to try to send us to Letters To Juliet, but TOO BAD.)

Well, hey, “thanks” to everyone who voted to send Will and me to The Back-Up Plan two weeks ago. Surprise! It was awful. No kidding, it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. Neither of us could find it in ourselves to hold back in our recap. And maybe you felt so bad about it that you voted up How To Drain Your Dragon for our fourteenth outing of the year? Regardless of the reason, thank you. I really liked it, and even Will managed to enjoy it more than he had expected to.

Time to vote again! I’d like to see Iron Man 2. I would also like to see Babies, but with my sister, when she comes to visit at the end of the month. Are you going to deny my dear sister that pleasure? She doesn’t get to go to a lot of movies, because she HAS a baby! So really, if you’re in favour of babies, and people who have them, you need to vote against Babies, the movie. Go vote for Iron Man 2 instead.

You might find it weird, when you read the recap Will and I wrote for Kick-Ass, that I seem to be defending so strenuously a movie that I start out describing as a disappointment. I did think the movie was only okay, but I kind of fell in love with the character of Hit-Girl, and since people seem to be throwing around words like “brainwashed” and “sociopath,” I wanted to stick up for her. Obviously, if Big Daddy were a real guy in Queens who’d turned his tiny daughter into a costumed vigilante and I read about him in the Times, I would be horrified. But in the movie they’re both pretty awesome. That’s all.

But next week…you guys. Please don’t make me see The Back-Up Plan. Don’t make us follow Kick-Ass with Hot Ass. Disney is releasing a perfectly lovely- and fascinating-looking documentary called Oceans, and just in time for Earth Day! Make us see that and help us all stave off extinction somehow! If nothing else, compare the good a movie like Oceans can do to the carbon footprint (or, let’s face it, buttprint) of Jennifer Lopez Inc. Do the right thing. Go vote!

I was already dorkily proud of this story I wrote for work, suggesting ways to shake up the Jim and Pam storyline on The Office. It was tough calibrating the tone so that it was still clear that I love the show and I don’t actually think I know better than the writers — so it was really gratifying when my friend Joya Balfour, a classmate from Grade 8 and 9 who’s now the Emmy-nominated producer of the show’s official website, tweeted that she loved it and was passing it on to the writers of the show. Glory! So I’ll be spending the weekend waiting for my offer to join the show’s writing staff.

I also created a charticle about TV’s inappropriate single mothers, which came out great except that I’m still kicking myself about the ones I forgot: Nancy and Celia from Weeds, and Edina from Absolutely Fabulous. Think of the omissions as, like, when the guys who weave Persian rugs intentionally leave in one error because no one’s perfect but God. (It wasn’t intentional, but let’s pretend.)
